Boys' Tennis: Raiders' season comes to an end

The season came to an end this past week for the Hastings Raiders boys' tennis team. The Raiders finished their season by competing in the section 3AA individual singles and doubles tournaments held at the Life Time Fitness in Lakeville on May 25. Competing for Hastings were singles players John Rupp and Brandon Kurilla, both seniors. The doubles teams were brothers Colby (sophomore) and Joe Zak (senior) and then junior Carson Konrady and senior Grant Hollar.

Rupp won his first match over Kevin Lee of St. Thomas 6-1, 0-6, 6-2. In the second round he fell to No. 1 seed Maxim Zagrebelny of Eagan 6-0, 6-0. Meanwhile, Kurilla won his first two matches. He beat George Stewart of St. Thomas 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round and then Austin Johnson of Rosemount 6-3, 6-3. He fell in the third round to Gavin Young of Eastview 6-0, 6-1.

The Raiders continued their relative success in doubles. Colby and Joe Zak received a first-round bye before falling in a tough match to Andres Fernandez and Emanuel Bonilla of South St. Paul 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round. Conrady and Hollar also made it out of the first round by beating Zach Haugstad and Saulzeth Kodimala of Woodbury 6-2, 6-0. The lost in the second round to Allen Gong and Ben Schriner of Eagan 6-2, 6-3.

Hastings wraps up another successful regular season where they won their first outright Metro East Conference championship and made it to the section semifinals where they were edged out in a close match to Eastview 4-3.
