The Hastings boys' swimming and diving team beat the Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders last week 95-91 before holiday break. Hastings and Cretin split the 12 events right down the middle, 6-6, and the meet came down to the last event, the 400 freestyle relay.
"(It was a) very exciting meet!" head coach Gerry Rupp said. "It came down to the last relay. We had to take second in the relay for the win and we were in third going into the last leg. John Rupp (senior) caught and passed the other swimmer to secure the victory, (but it was a) total relay team effort though to make it happen."
The team of Rupp, senior Jack Gergen, senior Carter Williams and freshman Avery Stoffel won the 200 medley relay with a time of one minute and 47.67 seconds. Gergen won the 50 freestyle in 22.88 seconds, senior Vova Tipler won the 1-meter dive with 275.00 points and freshman Joe Everson took first in the 500 freestyle (5:12.58).
Rupp won the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.84 seconds, while Gergen won the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.41. Finally, in the 400 freestyle relay, the team of Everson, Williams, Rupp and Stoffel took second with a time of 3:35.28, a little over a second faster than the third-place team.
The Raiders are back in the pool competing Thursday, Jan. 4, at South St. Paul.
