HHS girls' golf takes eighth at section 1AAA tournament
The Hastings girls' golf team competed at their section 1AAA tournament June 1 and June 5 at Cannon Falls Golf Club. They took eighth out of 13 teams and had three girls advance to day two — Hannah Hubbart, Nicole Neuman and Megan Brown.
Hubbart shot a 90 on day one and then a 99 on day two for a 189 total to lead the Raiders. Brown shot a 100 in the first round and a 97 in the second for a 197. Neuman shot a 100 and a 102 for a 202 total.
Head coach Becky Hartung said that the back nine of the course caused some trouble for her golfers but is confident that those returning next year will learn from their mistakes.
"They all played well on the front but struggled on the back nine," she explained. "There are four tough, water holes on the back and the kids need to know how to play those holes, what clubs to use, when to lay up and when to go for it. They played the course a number of times throughout the season and it's something they are motivated to work on in the offseason. They now know what to do to be successful at sections next year."
Looking back on the season overall, Hartung said that she feels her team did really well and is motivated to be even better next year.
"Overall I feel the season went really well, we had a lot of great girls out this year," Hartung said. "They really enjoy the game of golf and are already talking about what they can do this summer to improve their game for next year's season. I've really enjoyed coaching these girls this year, they have a strong work ethic and are motivated to improve their games."
The Raiders lose just one senior after this season — senior Nicole Neuman — and hopefully return several experienced varsity golfers for next year.
