HHS takes fifth at Metro East Conference championship

The Hastings girls' golf team had two conference meets this past week that included the entire conference. The first was a nine-hole warmup on May 22 at Rich Valley Golf Course before the conference championship and the Raiders took fourth. Then on May 24, they competed in the Metro East Conference championship at Highland National Golf Course in St. Paul, where they took fifth.

Sophomore Hannah Hubbart led Hastings at Rich Valley by shooting a 45. Junior Shannon O'Connor and seventh-grader Megan Brown both shot 49s, while senior Nicole Neuman shot a 51.

The Raiders placed fifth at the MEC championship and finished fourth overall for the entire season. Neuman picked a great time to shoot her best score of the season, coming in with an 18-hole score of 96. Sophomore Sam Benson shot 98, Hubbart had a 99 and O'Connor shot a 103.

Head coach Becky Hartung said that her team needs to take the next step and put together four quality scores.

"We have been struggling this year with getting a solid fourth score," she said. "We have been in the running all season for second (place in conference). Simley won the conference title this year, they've have been playing great consistent golf and went undefeated in the conference this year."

Hastings competes in sectionals on June 1 and June 5 at Cannon Golf Club in Cannon Falls.
