HHS boys' golf continues strong performance into end of season
The Hastings boys' golf team won a triangular against North St. Paul and Henry Sibley at Manitou Ridge Golf Course on May 16, and then took second in another triangular against St. Thomas Academy and Mahtomedi at Mendakota Country Club on May 18.
The Raiders beat North St. Paul and Henry Sibley by shooting a 155, 21 strokes ahead of the Polars and 31 in front of the Warriors. Junior Nick Dittrich was the medalist and shot even par with nine straight pars. Freshman Terry Kuhn came in with a 38 to finish second overall, junior Jack Williams shot a 40 and senior Zack Johnson a 41. Freshman Sam Brown tallied a 43 and junior Jacob Erickson shot a 46.
"The great scores were because we played the elevated greens well today," head coach Pete McGinnis said.
Two days later the Raiders, who shot a 159, took second behind St. Thomas Academy's 151 and ahead of Mahtomedi's 175.
"We knew this would be a close match with conference-leader St.Thomas and it was," McGinnis said. "Jack Williams finished with a tremendous 30-foot putt on the ninth hole for birdie to shoot a team low 38. Zack Johnson got off to solid start to finish with a 38. Both of those golfers really played well today on the very fast greens."
Dittrich shot a 40 and senior Charlie Wenker came in with a 43.
"St. Thomas is one of the top teams in the state and for us to play well on their home course was very positive," McGinnis explained. "We are set for the conference tournament on Wednesday, May 24, at Keller Golf Course in St. Paul. Currently we trail St. Thomas by six points and Hill-Murray by one point. Nick Dittrich is in second place by just one point. Jack Williams is in 12th place and Terry Kuhn is in 17th place. The points are doubled for the conference tournament so (there is) a lot of opportunity to move up."
Sections are at Lake City Jewel Golf Club on June 1 and 3. The state tournament is June 13-14 at Bunker Hills Golf Course.
