HHS boys' tennis drops conference championship to Mahtomedi

The Hastings boys' tennis team finished its regular season last week. They beat Rosemount 5-2 on Friday, May 12, but then faced Mahtomedi on Monday, May 15, in a match that would determine the Metro East Conference championship. Hastings lost 4-3 to the Zephyrs and finished their season 17-2 overall and 6-1 in the MEC.

Hastings split their four singles matches against Rosemount. Senior Alec Rudh lost first singles 3-6, 1-6 and fellow senior Brad Risch dropped second singles 2-6, 1-6. However, freshman Colby Zak won third singles 6-4, 6-2 and junior Grant Hollar took fourth singles 6-0, 6-2. The Raiders sealed their victory by sweeping all three doubles matches. Seniors Luke Johnson and Carson Konrady won first doubles 6-1, 6-2; juniors Brandon Kurilla and Joe Zak took second doubles 6-2, 6-3; and sophomores Brian Nielsen and Eric Howd clinched the sweep when they won third doubles 6-3, 6-1. Seniors Reese Estabrook and Colin Kummer won an exhibition doubles match 6-0, 6-0.

Against Mahtomedi, Hastings dropped three of four singles matches and won two of three doubles. Rudh lost 2-6, 2-6; Risch fell 1-6, 1-6 and Zak dropped third singles 0-6, 0-6. Hollar was the lone singles winner by the score of 7-6(1), 6-2. Konrady and Johnson won first doubles 6-1, 7-6(3); Kurilla and Joe Zak lost second doubles 3-6, 4-6; and Estabrook and Howd won third doubles 6-4, 6-4.

Hastings received the second seed in section 3AA and have a first-round bye. They face the winner of St. Thomas Academy and South St. Paul. East Ridge, who the Raiders lost to in the first match of the season, is the first seed.
