HHS boys' tennis wins three matches in a row to improve to 6-1
The Hastings boys' tennis team continued to roll this past week with three straight wins. The Raiders beat Tartan 7-0 April 11; blanked Hill-Murray 7-0 April 13, and edged a very good Northfield team 4-3 April 17. Hastings is now 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the Metro East Conference.
The Raiders soundly beat the Titans by sweeping all four singles and three doubles matches. Senior Alec Rudh won first singles 6-2, 6-1; fellow senior Luke Johnson won 6-2, 6-2 to take second singles; junior Brandon Kurilla won in third singles 6-1, 7-5 and sophomore Grant Hollar swept 12 straight points in fourth singles to win 6-0, 6-0.
Hastings' doubles teams only allowed one point between the three teams. Senior Brad Risch and freshman Colby Zak won 6-0, 6-1 in first doubles; junior Joe Zak and Hollar won second doubles 6-0, 6-0 and seniors Reese Estabrook and Luke Larson took third doubles 6-0, 6-0.
The Raiders continued their dominance against Hill-Murray by taking all seven matches. Rudh won first singles 6-2, 6-4; Risch took second singles 6-4, 6-0; Colby Zak won third singles 6-1, 6-4 and Hollar had two tight sets to win 7-5, 6-4 in fourth singles.
Hastings swept their doubles matches easily again. Johnson and sophomore Carson Konrady won first doubles 6-3, 6-2; Joe Zak and Kurilla took second doubles 6-0, 6-1 and in third doubles Estabrook and Larson won 6-0, 6-2.
The Raiders' real test came in the form of a very good Northfield team. Hastings was able to edge them 4-3 after splitting the four singles matches and taking two-out-of-three doubles.
Rudh lost first singles 6-7(3), 2-6 and Risch fell in second singles 3-6, 2-6. However, the Raiders were able to rally when Colby Zak took third singles 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and Hollar won fourth singles 7-5, 6-4.
Hastings also won the first two doubles matches to clinch the meet. Johnson and Colby Zak won first doubles 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, and the combination of Konrady and Kurilla won second doubles 6-1, 6-3. Estabrook and Larson fell in third doubles 3-6, 3-6.
The Raiders faced North St. Paul Tuesday, April 18, and host South St. Paul Thursday, April 20.
