Hastings races at competitive Mayo cross country meet

Every year, the Hastings cross country teams run at the very competitive Mayo Cross Country Invitational in Rochester.

Every year, it’s a real eye-opener.

Hastings sees some of the top teams in the state at the meet, and this year was no different.

The Hastings boys placed 13th in the meet with 324 points. There were 19 teams in the meet.

Wayzata won the race with 25 points. Stillwater was second with 34 and Red Wing was third with 147.

“This is like a mini state meet,” coach John Dewall said. “Our team results were still very good.

Kyle Gudmunson led Hastings with a time of 17 minutes and 50.52 seconds. He was 47th overall.

“I think Kyle always races tough,” Dewall said.

Bobby Verchota was 50th in 17:54.78.

“Bobby is just coming up and improving by leaps and bounds,” Dewall said. “He’s improving every meet and looking extremely well.”

Will Caturia took 58th in 18:05.89.

Mike Tappella finished 88th in 18:40.77.

Jonathon Vouk was 102nd in 18:58.02.

Nick Johnson finished 115th in 19:20.47.

Mason Minnick had a time of 19:26.32 and placed 119th.

In the junior varsity race, Nate Holm had a strong run, taking 36th with a time of 19:04.38.

Finley Myers was 41st in 19:10.15 and Will Briercliffe was close behind with a 43rd-place finish in 19:13.03.

Also racing were: Nick Sampson, 61st, 19:41.12; Brandon Haraldson, 65th, 19:43.22; Seth Greengo, 67th, 19:44.77; Griffin Myers, 92nd, 20:05.31; Austin Rink, 101st, 20:17.34; Victor Lindgren, 142nd, 21:17.49; Clay Fleck, 149th, 21:31.43; Mark Swinehart, 164th, 21:50.72; Doug Nordine, 177th, 22:17.20; Mike Cherry, 180th, 22:24.10.

Girls

The Hastings girls placed 21st out of 24 teams. Wayzata won the girls meet with 70 points. Austin was second (94) and Eastview was third (103). Hastings finished with 609 points.

Abberly Smith led the Raiders with a 79th-place finish in 18 minutes and 5.9 seconds.

Quinn Myers was 105th in 18:49.6.

Ciara Christensen took 129th in 19:43.1.

Cici Carlson was 140th in 20:28.0 and Rosie Pechous was 156th in 22:02.2.

Meanwhile, several Hastings eighth-graders stayed back in Hastings to race at the middle school meet. The Raiders had five of the top eight runners in that meet.
