Raider girls place third at SEC meet

The Hastings girls Alpine skiing team got its Suburban East Conference season off to a good start recently with a third-place finish at Wild Mountain.

Stillwater won the meet with 685 points. Mounds View was second with 667 and Hastings was third with 596. Ten teams competed at the meet.

Gabriella Sorg led Hastings at the race. She placed fifth.

Sorg had a time of 28.21 seconds on the first run and 27.7 on the second for a combined time of 55.91.

The winner of the event, Juliana Damberg of Mounds View, had a time of 53.04.

Ellie Peine was seventh for Hastings. She had a combined time of 56.78 seconds.

Rosie Pechous was 12th in 57.66.

Sara Juelfs placed 19th in 59.7.

Sarah Kieffer took 25th in 60.24.

Josie Pechous placed 27th in 60.81.

Shannon O’Connor took 39th in 63.72.

Katie Roach, Kayla Boogren and Kirstie Clothier also raced for Hastings.


The Hastings boys placed sixth at the meet with 452 points.

The race was won by Stillwater with 740. Forest Lake was second and East Ridge was third.

Jake Gartzke led the Hastings boys. He placed 22nd with a combined time of 72.61 seconds.

Sam McKinney, 28th, 75.57; Jacob Peine, 31st, 76.44; Hayden Niebur, 36th, 77.92; Thomas Goonan, 41st, 78.77; Josh Juelfs, 54th, 86.73; Logan Welshons, 70th, 98.49; John Schmitz, Jack Caturia and Stephen O’Connor also competed for the Raiders.

Junior varsity

Hastings had competitors in the junior varsity meets, too.

On the girls side, Logan Doty led the team with a seventh-place finish. She had a time of 77.36.

C.J. Kremer was 12th in 78.21.

For the boys, Nick Holm was the lone competitor. He took 19th in 105.21.
