Raiders get win over Sibley in girls basketball

The Hastings girls basketball team celebrated a win last week. The Raiders beat Henry Sibley, 58-45, on Friday. It was the first win of the year for the team, which is now 1-3.

Hastings coach Tim Cerni knows wins have been hard to come by for the Raiders in recent seasons.

“It was a big win – we needed to get one,” Cerni said. “Any time you can get a win, it’s huge.”

While Hastings gave up size down low, the team was able to prevent the Warriors from taking advantage of that height. Hastings played a 1-3-1 zone and the team worked hard to limit the number of times the Warriors were able to dump the ball in down low.

“We stopped the ball from going inside,” Cerni said. “That was huge. Because we were sealing them off, we won the rebounding war against a bigger team. That was probably the key to the game.”

It didn’t hurt, either, that the Raiders had a huge performance from junior guard Hanna Norman, who scored 29 points, had 13 rebounds and four steals.

“She was really something,” Cerni said. “When she gets going, she’s our hope. She’s such a good athlete. She just tries so hard, and her energy level is excellent.”

Norman hit a number of big shots, including seven free throws in a row down the stretch to seal the win.

Norman is now at about 700 points for her HHS career.

Sam Schorzman also had a strong game for Hastings. She scored 14 points and had seven rebounds.

Cerni also said Mikaela Blount had a good game.

“She rebounded really well and played great defense for us,” Cerni said. “She played some very good interior defense.”

Grace Daggett also had a nice night.

“She just played steady for us,” Cerni said. “She didn’t score a lot, but she really helped defensively.”

Here’s how the scoring went for the game:

Norman 29, Schorzman 14, Lily Arvidson 2, Daggett 4, Julia Kneen 4, Kayla Denault 2 and Blount 3.

Hastings lost to South St. Paul on Dec. 7, 52-33.

Arvidson led HHS in scoring with 11 points.

Norman, hobbled by a leg bruise, scored nine.
