Raiders volleyball season ends with loss to Huskies

One year ago, Faribault beat Hastings in the first round of the section volleyball tournament, ending the season for the Raiders.

This time around, Hastings was out to earn a different result, and the Raiders did just that. They beat Faribault in four sets to earn a trip to the section semifinals.

“We were out for revenge,” coach Rita Girgen said. “We were up on them last season – two wins right from the get-go, but we lost that match in five. We came (this year) with daggers, I would have to say, for this one.”

Hastings advanced to the second round of the section meet with the win, but the team lost to Owatonna to end its season.

“We had a fantastic season,” Girgen said. “We won more sets. Our matches lasted longer. We were more competitive. Unfortunately you can’t see that when you look at our win-loss record, but our season was actually very successful.”

Girgen thanked the seniors on the roster.

“I feel like they have shown so much commitment and dedication throughout the years,” she said. “My goal is that they can see how all this has paid off for them. When they take a step back, I hope they see they gained a lot from being involved in the program and representing Hastings volleyball.

“I do think everyone is leaving with a good taste in their mouth. We are excited about next season, and we won’t forget about this season – that’s for sure.”

Vs. Faribault

In the win over Faribault, Hastings had especially strong play from the back row, Girgen said.

“Our back row played amazing,” she said. “They were a huge reason for winning that match in four sets.”

The back row was made up of Shelby Wassink, Nicole Bauer and Paige Ahrens.

Hastings won 25-21, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-19.
