The Hastings girls' swimming and diving team opened their 2017 season against Farmington and it would be tough to ask for a closer result.

Farmington narrowly edged out the Raiders 95-89 and both teams won six events apiece. Despite the result, head coach Katie McAlpin said her team had some great performances.

"The diver of the meet was Lauren Ruder," McAlpin explained. "Lauren improved her first score of the year by almost 40 points from last year's start. That is a fantastic way to start the season off. The swimmer of the meet was Shannon McCullough. Shannon had four best times Thursday night, cut 18 seconds off her 100 butterfly and 10 seconds off her 100 breaststroke. I believe that Shannon will do great things this season."

Winners of events for the Raiders were: Senior Emily Weldon won the 1-meter dive with a score of 1847.70; sophomore Drew Gerlach won the 100 butterfly in 1minute 3.76 seconds (1:03.76); junior Natasha Girgen in the 100 freestyle (55.93) and 100 backstroke (1:03.38); eighth-grader Kendra Kosmoski in the 500 freestyle (5:48.83); and the 400 freestyle relay team of Gerlach, freshman Emma Gelhar, Girgen and eighth-grader Kendal Jenkins (4:36.55).

Hastings also had several second-place finishes. The 200 medley relay team of Girgen, Gerlach, Gelhar and sophomore Katie Gjelhaug (1:57.97); Kosmoski in the 200 freestyle (2:11.30); Gjelhaug in the 200 IM (2:25.34); freshman Molly Vaughan in the one meter dive (165.60); the 200 freestyle relay team of Jenkins, sophomore Brooklyn Byrd, Kosmoski and freshman Jocelyn Brink (1:51.56) and the 400 freestyle relay team of Kosmoski, Gjelhaug, junior Katie Shogren and eighth-grader Ireland Zaruba (4:456.19).

Third-place finishers were Gerlach in the 50 freestyle (26.71); Jenkins in the 100 butterfly (1:06.38); and Brink in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.11).

The Raiders next travel to Simley on Thursday, Aug. 31, for the Metro East Conference relays.
