Hastings and Miesville both make playoffs, could meet again
The Hastings Hawks and Miesville Mudhens have both made the section 1B playoffs. The Hawks will play the Austin BlueSox 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, in Hastings with the winner playing top-seeded Miesville in a best-of-three series.
The Hawks finished their season with a 9-8 win over the Austin BlueSox on Friday, July 28, which allowed them to host the BlueSox again in the play-in game. Ben Bundschu was the winning pitcher and threw 6 2/3 innings, allowed seven runs on nine hits and four walks with four strikeouts. Adam Medlicott got the two-inning save after relieving Spencer Diedrich. Jordan Jeske, Medlicott and Wes Hedlund each had two hits for Hastings and Diedrich had four RBIs on a grand slam.
Earlier in the week, Hastings lost to the Minneapolis Cobras 6-4. With the regular season ended, the Hawks finished with a 6-22 overall record (some results missing) and were 3-12 in the Classic Cannon Valley .
The Mudhens won three games this past week to continue their torrid winning streak. They beat the Waterville Indians on last Wednesday, July 26, 10-6 in Miesville; they then traveled to Austin on July 29 and blew out the Greyhounds 12-1; and lastly hosted Chaseburg Coon Valley Blues on July 30 and won 9-2.
Miesville has won 17 games in a row and have one more tune-up game before the playoffs. They hosted the Champlin LoGators on Wednesday, Aug. 2, before they start their series with the winner of the Hastings Hawks vs. Austin BlueSox play-in game. The Mudhens are the number one seed in the section 1B playoffs and would advance to the state tournament with a win in the series against either the Hawks or BlueSox.
Game one of the playoff series is Friday, Aug. 4, in Miesville at 8 p.m. Game two is either in Hastings or Austin, depending on the winner of the play-in game, on Sunday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m. If a third game is needed, it will be in Miesville on Friday, Aug. 11, at 8 p.m. if necessary.
