Hastings boys nearly win Hudson cross country meet

For the second week in a row, the Hastings boys cross country team came close to winning an invitational.

Last week, Hastings nearly won the Waconia invite. This week, they almost won the Hudson Raider Invitational.

Hudson, though, eked out the win with 69 points. Hastings had 77. There were 11 teams in the meet.

“The guys did awesome,” coach John Dewall said.

Mason Minnick surprised the coaches by being the fifth-fastest runner on the team for the day.

“He had a great race to be our fifth scorer,” Dewall said. “We need to bring him closer, and we will win these big meets.”

Will Caturia, fifth, 18:02.3; Kyle Gudmunson, 10th, 18:21.6; Mike Tappella, 14th, 18:31.2; Bobby Verchota, 22nd, 18:47.8; Mason Minnick, 26th, 19:01.0; Will Briercliffe, 33rd, 19:17.6; Finley Myers, 38th, 19:25.7.

Varsity girls

The Hastings girls placed ninth out of 10 teams at the meet with 208 points.

Mahtomedi was the winner with 44. Hudson was second with 64 and Coon Rapids was third with 74.

Abberly Smith, 34th, 17:39.7; Alexis Edmundson, 36th, 17:42.2; Quinn Myers, 37th, 17:45.8; Reilly Johnson, 47th, 18:26.1; Ciara Christensen, 54th, 18:58.8; Hannah Peterson, 56th, 19:35.4; Megan Mattson, 57th, 19:35.8.

Junior varsity

The Hastings boys junior varsity team won its meet with 34 points. New Richmond was second with 80.

Finishers were: Griffin Myers, second, 19:39.3; Seth Greengo, third, 19:42.4; Brandon Haraldson, fifth, 19:46.0; Dane Long, eighth, 20:00.1; Austin Rink, 16th, 20:26.8; Levi O’Tool, 21st, 20:36.8; Mark Swinehart, 28th, 20:49.4.

For the girls, Hastings was seventh out of eight teams with 204 points.

Finishing for Hastings were: Libby Judge, 35th, 19:45.7; Kira Welshons, 37th, 20:14.1; Rosie Pechous, 41st, 20:23.8; Megan Meyers, 45th, 20:59.8; Kaitlyn Walderon, 46th, 21:10.5; Savannah Henderson, 49th, 22:04.8; Maddie Eggert, 54th, 26:59.5.
