Raiders volleyball team wins three more MEC matchups

The Hastings girls volleyball team is 8-3 on the season and undefeated in Metro East Conference play.

That sentence is music to the ears of volleyball fans here who watched the Raiders dismantle Henry Sibley on Thursday in three straight games.

The Warriors were vastly overmatched in the contest and Hastings cruised to a 25-14, 25-7 and 25-18 win. It wasn’t long ago that Hastings was the team on the other side of some tough losses like that one.

“I’m really proud of how the girls handled themselves through that one,” coach Rita Girgen said. “It’s easy to play down to teams, but we didn’t. We gave in a little bit in that last set with them, but we still stuck it out. It’s really difficult to play those matches – it can be just as difficult to play those as it is the top teams.”

Sibley is 2-6 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.

Vs Hill-Murray

On Tuesday, Sept. 9, Hastings had all kinds of trouble against Hill-Murray in the opening set of a MEC matchup. The Raiders, though, figured things out in a hurry and came on strong to win.

The Pioneers won the first set, 25-15, before Hastings reeled off three wins in a row – 25-20, 25-23 and 25-18.

“Starting out, we were neck and neck with them,” Girgen said. “They ran with it to close out the first set, but after that we just stepped it up. We realized this was a team we could play with and beat. It was just a mentality after that point. We put it all together. The girls played phenomenal volleyball.”

Defense was the key, Girgen said.

“Our defense was amazing,” she said. “Our defense at the net. Our defense in the back row. All around we made some big plays. That was the difference between us winning and losing that night. Our defense was so on – it really shut them down.”
