Raiders have tough showing at Mayo cross country invite
Talk about a tough field — the Hastings cross country teams saw some of the state’s top teams last week at the annual Rochester Mayo Cross Country Invitational. The meet was held at Eastwood Golf Course and for the boys featured 23 teams.
The Hastings boys placed 18th as a team with 439 points.
Wayzata was first, Stillwater was second and Winona was third.
Zack Benning led Hastings with a sixth-place finish in 16:00.9.
“Zack was sick — he’s got bronchitis,” coach John Dewall said. “Any time you are going up against some of the top runners in the state, and you aren’t at 100 percent, it’s going to be tough. He’ll be back, ready to rip it up next week.”
Will Caturia was 88th in 18:24.4.
Will Briercliffe took 108th in 18:58.1.
“Both of the Wills are running consistent,” Dewall said. “They’re always right there, doing real well.”
Nate Holm finished 112th in 19:03.6.
“Nate has been real solid here in the last few meets,” Dewall said.
Nick Johnson and Kyle Gudmunson rounded out the varsity team. Johnson was 125th in 19:33.6 and Gudmunson took 141st in 20:19.0.
Johnson recently worked his way onto varsity.
“That’s the second time he’s been in the top five for us,” Dewall said. “We’re real impressed with Nick and how he’s running for us.”
