Volleyball team sitting at 3-5

After eight games already this season, the Hastings girls volleyball team has settled for a 3-5 record. Some years, Hastings would be thrilled with that mark. This year, that's now the team feels. Three of those losses came over the weekend at a tournament in Apple Valley.

"I feel like we should be at least .500 at this point -- I think we should have a few more wins," coach Rita Girgen said. "We have a ton of potential that we need to reach. I feel like we should have won one of our section matches, and I think we should have had at least one more win at Apple Valley.

"It's early in the season, so we have plenty of time to fine tune and stabilize our lineup. All in all, I feel like we are sitting alright."

In Apple Valley, Hastings lost to Minneapolis Southwest, 2-0.

"I thought we played really well in that one," Girgen said. "They're the best team we've seen yet. That's a fantastic team. They were just the better team."

The Raiders lost to Concordia Academy (2-0) and Centennial (2-0) before turning things around and beating Virginia, 2-0.

"Against Concordia and Centennial, we just didn't show up -- that's what it boils down to," Girgen said. "We have to make sure we find a balance in our play. We had a lot of highs and lows."

Girgen has been encouraged by what she's seen from her team.

"We know that we can hang with any team out there when we are all on the same page and play together," she said. "If we do that, we're good. It's a matter of keeping that consistent -- we always have to be prepared to play."
