Hawks lose first game of the season

After winning the first three games of the season over Stewartville, Pine Island and the Minneapolis Patriots, the Hastings Hawks lost their first League game of the season last Sunday, losing to Northfield 6-1 at Veteran's Park.

Hastings' own Josie Velez started on the hill for the Hawks and went 8-1/3 innings, allowing four runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out five. Andrew Flack relieved Velez in the ninth, allowing two runs on one hit and striking out one.

The Hawks gave up a run to the Knights in the first inning on a single, a walk and a single. After that, it was shut-out ball till the ninth when the Knights sent 10 men to the plate, scoring five times on five hits.

Hastings did not get on the board until the seventh inning. With one out, Andy Sammon singled. Jake Swartout singled, moving Sammon to third where he scored on a single by Anstin Hebig.

The Hawks will play again this weekend with games Friday night against Highland Park at 7:30 p.m., a 2 p.m. game in Dundas Sunday and another home game on Memorial Day against Lake City at 2 p.m.
