Wingers end Hastings baseball season, 7-1

A 7-1 loss to the Red Wing Wingers ended the season for the Hastings baseball team on Monday, May 28.

"Our playoff game was a microcosm of our season," coach Paul Hartmann said. "We were close, but were just unable to grab some early momentum. Like our season, if we were able to take advantage of some of those opportunities early on, it changes everything."

Red Wing took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, then added a run in the third to go up 4-0.

Hastings scored in the top of the fifth inning to pull the score to 4-1. The lone Hastings run was scored on a home run by Matt Koch.

In the bottom of the fifth, though, the Wingers scored one run, then added two more in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.

Aaron Stoneberg and Trey Pottinger were the only other batters to get hits for Hastings.

Stoneberg took the loss on the mound. He threw five innings and allowed five earned runs on 10 hits.

"We have some juniors who gained valuable experience this year and learned some things about competing at this level," Hartmann said. "We look forward to watching their improvement throughout the summer and seeing what they can do next spring.

"We wish our seniors the best in the future. I always look forward to continuing these relationships as these guys grow to be men."
