Hastings edges Cretin, 1-0

Through the first two periods of last Tuesday's girls hockey game between Hastings and Cretin-Derham Hall, not one puck hit the back of the net.

At 7:07 of the third period, that changed, thanks to Mikayla Minnaert. The Hastings skater notched the game's first and only goal, and Hastings went on to win, 1-0. She was assisted by Sami Claussen.

"The game could have gone to either team since we both had some good scoring chances, but both goalies came up big at important times," Hastings coach Jeff Corkish said. "Brooke Weber played very well for us stopping a breakaway that could have given them the lead."

Hastings is now 11-12-1 overall and 7-9-1 in the Suburban East Conference.

"Our girls did a great job all night, keeping them in their end for long stretches with a high intensity forecheck that we have been trying to tighten up the last couple of weeks," Corkish said. "We have been keeping our defense back more often and relying on the pressure from the forwards resulting in few odd man rushes against. With an inexperienced defensive group it is important that we take some pressure off of them so they can focus on keeping the game simple."

Hastings is preparing to wind down the regular season. The season finale is Saturday at White Bear Lake. The Bears are 9-4 in the league.
