It would be a major understatement to say the Hastings boys and girls cross country teams got to run in unique conditions last Thursday.

The teams competed in the annual extreme meet in River Falls, which has the athletes running through streams, down muddy riverbanks and through the forest.

Coach John Dewall was pleased with what he saw from his team at the meet.

"The kids did really well," he said. "We had a lot of great performances out of our young girls, and our guys did just fantastic.

"It's a tough race. Some of our new, little, young kids who are racing for the first time, they ran through the forest and the woods and the water. It was pretty cool.

"Everybody just stepped up. It's going to be a real fun season. There's no question about that. It was the most exciting meet we've had in years. We're real excited for a great season."

The official meet results were not compiled in time to include in this week's issue.
