Wrestlers place 14th at The Clash

The Hastings Raiders wrestling team (ranked 18th nationally) traveled to Rochester to compete in the Clash IX. It was Hastings seventh trip to this national dual tournament consisting of 14 of the top 39 wrestling teams in the nation. Five of the six teams the Raiders faced were nationally ranked with Hastings finishing 3-3 on the weekend and in 14th place.

Hastings 52 vs. Oak Grove, MO 18

The Raiders started the Clash with a convincing win over Oak Grove, Missouri (Ranked No. 1 in class 2). The match itself did not start well for Hastings but the team rebounded to pull away with a convincing victory.

With the match stating at 112 pounds, Luke Rowh (No. 9 at 103) faced Mitchell Bradley (No. 1 at 112). Bradley got off to a fast start by scoring the first takedown and extended his lead with 12 nearfall points to lead 14-0 after one period. After Rowh was given an escape, Bradley secured another takedown to win by technical fall 16-1.

At 119 pounds, Corey Latuff's (No. 4 at 130) opponent was Anthony Barker (No. 3 at 119). Latuff scored a first period takedown to jump out in front 2-0 after one period. But the second period belonged to Baker who scored a reversal and two nearfall points to lead 4-2 after two periods. Latuff was unable to counter with any points of his own and lost 4-2.

At 125 pounds, Eric Bauer (No. 4 at 125) faced Brandon Morgason (No. 3 at 125) and gave Hastings its first team points of the match with a 13-3 major decision.

At 130 pounds, Keenan Menge made his varsity debut with a 7-1 decision over Logan Cairer, and at 135 pounds, Hunter Swenson scored a 2-0 decision against Bryce Mercer.

Oak Grove took the 140 pound match with a pin by second ranked Taylor Brinegar over Dylan Nelson.

At 145 pounds, Zach Rohr (No. 1 at 145) put Hastings back in the win column with second period pin over Dylan Stiegemeyer. While Jeff Engstrom, 152 pounds, pinned Chase Wrisinger (No. 2 at 152) in the third period to give Hastings a lead of 22-14 in the dual.

Oak Grove scored its last points of the dual with an 11-0 major decision by second ranked Caleb Titus over Alex Nygaard.

Now leading 22-18 in the dual, Hastings put its foot down and rode pins by ninth-ranked Jake Swenson (171), Josh Lohmann (189), sixth-ranked Isaac Eichmann (215), and eight-ranked Isaac Bauer (103) along with a forfeit to Heavyweight Jake Anderson to close out the dual.

Simley 49

The Raiders did not have a good performance against Simley, ranked fifth nationally. The Spartans took control early and were never really tested by the Raiders. Hastings was unable to win any of the close matches and the score quickly escalated out of hand.

In the 119 pound match, Corey Latuff lost a 6-1 decision to Pedro Delao (No. 3 at 119). At 125 pounds, Eric Bauer scored a 7-1 decision over Mack Short.

At 130 pounds, Simley's' Cola Jensen scored a second period pin over Hastings' Keenan Menge putting the Spartans in front for good at 9-3.

The 135 pound match saw Dan Marquette lose 16-6 to Matt Kruse (No. 6 at 135). Dylan Nelson had to injury default to top-ranked Jake Short, at 140 pounds.

Zach Rohr (No. 1 at 145) faced Nick Wanzek (No. 3 at 145) in a rematch of the Christmas tournament finals, which Rohr won. Unfortunately, this time Wanzek came out on top with a 7-3 decision.

Jeff Engstrom (152) found himself up against Dan Dick (No. 1 at 160), who rode to a 9-0 major decision to victory for the Spartans. Bryan Rachuy (160) was unable to get out of the first period against Micah Barnes (No. 1 at 171).

At 171 pounds, Jake Swenson gave Hastings its final points of the dual with a first period pin over Joe Reif.

Josh Lohmann gave up a 5-0 decision to Cody Hazlett, at 189 pounds, with Isaac Eichmann losing a 7-4 slugfest at 215 pounds.

Heavyweight Jake Anderson lost 5-0 decision to Matt Kadrlik (No. 4 at 285), followed by 4-1 loss by Isaac Bauer to top ranked Kyle Gliva.

At 112 pounds, Danny Gove surrendered a 17-2 technical fall to Juan Torres (No. 2 at 125) to end the dual.

Hastings 16 vs. St. Michael Albertville 40

Once again, the Raiders struggled to pull out the close matches against a tough STMA team, ranked 39th nationally, on their way to another disappointing loss.

With this dual starting at 125 pounds, Hastings was able to get the first points when Eric Bauer secured a 3-1 decision over Mark Voss (No. 5 at 112).

STMA claimed the next three close matches with wins by sixth-ranked Wayne Voss (6-4 decision over Keenan Menge) at 130 pounds, Michael Lundquist (12-7 decision over Hunter Swenson) at 135 pounds, and Michael Nerdahl (7-3 decision over Jake Anderson) at 140 pounds.

Zach Rohr (No. 1 at 145) pulled Hastings close with 15-5 major decision over Lucas Martin at 145 pounds.

Bryan Rachuy, 152 pounds, gave up a first period pin to third-ranked Jake Lillie to give STMA a 15-7 lead.

At 160 pounds, Jeff Engstrom pulled Hastings close with a come from behind pin in third period over Ricky Briggs to make the score 15-13 STMA.

That would be as close as Hastings would come as they were unable to break through with any wins over the next six matches. Losses by Jake Rachuy at 171 pounds (first period pin), Jake Swenson at 189 pounds (6-3 decision to Shaun Little), Isaac Eichmann at 215 pounds (7-1 decision to Nick Edling), Jake Anderson at Heavyweight (pin by second-ranked Parker Betts), Isaac Bauer at 103 pounds (6-1 decision to Tommy Thorn), and Luke Rowh at 112 pounds (13-2 major decision to Cole Sladek) allowed STMA to cruise to victory over a frustrated Raiders team.

In the final match of the night for the Raiders, Corey Latuff secured a 10-0 major decision over ninth-ranked Lincoln Mallinger to end the scoring at 40-16 STMA.

Having rested from Friday's matches, the Raiders had an extra spring in their step as they started wrestling Saturday afternoon. The men wrestled with much more confidence and determination than the day before in winning two of the three duals on Saturday. The matches were definitely a team effort, with each wrestler doing their part in either winning their match or losing by only a decision and saving precious bonus points.

Hastings 41 vs. Grand Island, MO 25

The Raiders put the frustration of Friday's matches in the rear view mirror as they focused on their opening round opponent, Grand Island (ranked 31st nationally). The match did not start well for the Raiders; they quickly fell behind but were able bounce back and eventually pull away from the Islanders.

This dual started at 130 pounds with Keenan Menge falling in the first round to top-ranked Andrew Riedy of Grand Island. Trying to regroup for the Raiders was Dan Marquette who was facing second-ranked Blake Fruchti. Marquette wrestled tough in losing 16-6.

At 140 pounds, Hastings Hunter Swenson fell in the second period to top-ranked Carlos Rodriguez. Trailing 16-0 going into the 145 pound match, Hastings inserted Jake Anderson into the lineup and gave up a 7-2 decision against Grand Island's Chase Reis.

The momentum began to change for the Raider at 152 pounds, when senior captain Zach Rohr scored a 9-7 overtime victory against second-ranked Billy Leetch to put Hastings on the board.

Next for the Raiders in the dual was a string of pins by Jeff Engstrom (160 pounds) over Pierce Fiala, Jake Swenson (171 pounds) over second-ranked Jeff Brisbin, Josh Lohmann (189 pounds) over Jose Ceballos, and Isaac Eichmann (215 pounds) over Ben Najera.

Now leading 27-19 in the dual, Heavyweight Jake Anderson recorded a 3-0 decision over Danny Sotelo.

At 103 pounds, Hastings' Isaac Bauer scored a 12-4 major decision over top-ranked Dante Rodriguez giving the Raiders a 34-19 advantage.

Luke Rowh, wrestling at 112 pounds, gave up a second period pin to third-ranked Trey Trujillo to pull the Islanders to within nine points at 34-25.

Corey Latuff, 119 pounds, sealed the victory with a 6-2 decision over Tanner McClaren while Eric Bauer, 125 pounds, finished off the scoring with an 8-0 major decision over top-ranked Marcus Peterson.

Hastings, MN 35 vs. Roseburg, OR 28

Another strong performance by the wrestlers moved them to their second win of the day by powering past Roseburg, OR (ranked No. 17 nationally). The Raiders kept things close early, eventually pulling out a victory late in the dual.

Dan Marquette started things for the Raiders, 135 pounds, with a 15-0 technical fall to second-ranked Reed VanAnrooy. Hunter Swenson, 140 pounds, gave up a 6-0 decision to sixth-ranked Chayse Jackson to make the score 8-0 Roseburg.

Zach Rohr, 145 pounds, put Hastings in the win column with a 10-2 major decision.

Hastings' Jake Anderson, 152 pounds, fell to top-ranked Seth Thomas in the first period.

Jeff Engstrom, 160 pounds, scored a 14-3 major decision against Javier Mandera to pull Hastings close at 14-8.

Jake Swenson (171 pounds) battled hard in losing 1-0 to top-ranked Dylan Fors while Josh Lohmann (189 pounds) surrendered a 16-1 technical fall to Devan Fors.

Trailing 8-22 going into 215 pounds, Isaac Eichmann pulled out a 5-0 decision over fourth-ranked Ben Goirgolzarri with Jake Anderson(Heavyweight) scoring a second period pin to make the score 17-22 Roseburg.

Isaac Bauer's (103 pounds) 5-0 decision over Payton Mesa along with Luke Rowh's (112 pounds) 10-5 decision over Cameron Mesa put Hastings in the lead for good.

Corey Latuff (119 pounds) scored a second period pin against Layne Westwang to push the score to 29-22 Hastings.

Eric Bauer (125 pounds) clinched the dual with a second period pin of Brody Faas, giving the Raiders a 35-22 lead with one match to go.

Keenan Menge (130 pounds) quickly fell to top-ranked Drew VanAnrooy to end the dual at 35-28

Hastings, MN 24 vs. Kasson-Mantorville MN 31

The Raiders found themselves in a dog fight as nine matches were decided by four points or less with the Kasson- Mantorville Komets (ranked No. 36 nationally). Hastings was unable to win a few key matches in succumbing to the Komets in the final dual for both teams.

Hunter Swenson (140 pounds) started the dual with a 7-5 loss to Dakota Hansen but Zach Rohr (145 pounds) quickly answered with a first period pin of Daniel Lattner to put Hastings up 6-3.

Jeff Engstrom (152 pounds) had a heartbreaking 5-2 loss to Zach Schrieber to tie the team score at 6-6.

Bryan Rachuy (160 pounds) wrestled to a 3-0 loss to Corben Hansen followed by a tough 6-3 loss for the Raiders by Jake Swenson (171 pounds).

Now trailing 6-12, Jake Rachuy (189 pounds) was given the task of trying save team points against top-ranked Brock Berge. Rachuy gave up a 23-9 major to save two team points for the Raiders.

Josh Lohmann (215 pounds) came up big with a first period pin for Hastings to pull the Raiders close at 12-16.

Isaac Eichmann (Heavyweight) bumped up to wrestle eight-ranked Sam Stoll, where Eichmann was unable to secure a late takedown in losing 3-0.

Isaac Bauer (103 pounds) rode to a 4-0 decision over Ryan Erdman while Luke Rowh (112 pounds) battled tough with top-ranked Nate Thomas before losing 5-1 to bring the score to 15-22 KM.

Wins by Corey Latuff (119 pounds) 2-1 decision over third-ranked Tony Morrow and Eric Bauer (125 pounds) first period pin of Brandon Schorr, gave Hastings it final points of the dual at 24-22.

Keenan Menge (130 pounds) came up short against second-ranked Coltan Laganeire to give the Komets a 25-24 lead going into the last match.

Top-ranked Garret Garness scored a first period pin over Dan Marquette to seal the victory for Kasson-Mantorville.

Next up for the Raiders is an SEC dual Thursday in White Bear Lake and the Kiffmeyer Duals in St. Cloud on Saturday.
