Volleyball team goes 0-4-2 at Coon Rapids

Saturday couldn't have been much busier than it was for the Hastings volleyball team. The Raiders played six matches in one day during the annual Coon Rapids Tournament. Hastings went 0-4-2 in the six.

The good news for Hastings, according to coach Rita Girgen, was that a few changes made in the lineup appeared to work, and those should go a long way toward helping Hastings down the stretch.

One of the changes involved moving senior setter Amy Becker to the outside left side. That appeared to be working, but then Becker hurt her shoulder, Girgen said.

While the Raiders hoped to fare better than 0-4-2 at the tournament, Girgen wasn't disappointed with what happened there.

"It wasn't a bad day for us," she said. "I don't think the end result gave us justice for the way that we played."

Hastings lost to Coon Rapids in the opening round, 2-0.

Hastings then tied Rogers (1-1) and lost to Centennial (2-0).

In the afternoon, Hastings fell to Armstrong (2-0) and Stillwater (2-0) before tying Providence Academy (1-1) to conclude the tournament.

"We had a lot of players who came off the bench, stepped in and played some really big roles for the team," Girgen said.

Allison Wenker, a senior, was one of those players, Girgen said.

"She was just waiting for that opportunity," Girgen said. "She came in, was one of our leaders in kills, and that's what we are looking for from our left sides right now - someone to put the ball away. She did a good job of that."

Becker was "very consistent," Girgen said, at the outside until she got hurt.

"We were super excited to have her out there," Girgen said.

In the tournament, the Raiders were led by Biancca DuFour in kills with 21. Liz Keena had 18 and Heather Petersen had 13.

Kaylyn Nicklay had 34 set assists, and Wenker had 30.

Megan Oakes recorded a serve-receive-average of 2.182. Devon Santelman had a 1.86.

Santelman led the Raiders in digs with 28.

Keena led in blocks with two solos and two assists. DuFour had one solo and four assists.

DuFour had four aces and Nicklay had three.

Wenker had 14 serving points. Nicklay had 12 and Santelman had 10.
