Soccer: Raiders lose close one to C-DH
A midfield battle between Cretin-Derham Hall and Hastings was won by C-DH on Thursday, 1-0, at the Metrodome.
Cretin scored the winning goal with just seven minutes left to play off a throw-in.
"We just got caught ball-watching," Hastings coach Shane Lanning said. "It was a tough one to lose."
The Metrodome field certainly added a wrinkle to the game. It is much wider than most fields the Raiders play on during the regular season, and Lanning said that with his team's great speed on defense, the big field worked to the team's advantage.
"We could play more aggressively," he said. "If they got around one of our guys, we had time to catch up."
Hastings played a 4-4-2 formation, and the four defenders had a strong game, Lanning said.
Sam Ritt and Alex Lewanski were among the players who Lanning praised for their efforts.
"Sam, especially in the second half, he came in and made a huge difference," Lanning said. "He ran the outside midfield. That's not his normal position, but he did quite well and really contributed. He stepped up on the defensive side of the ball and the offensive side of the ball. He did extremely well.
"One thing that really impressed me about Alex was that he kind of got into more of attacking defender role. There were quite a few times he was well past the 50 yard line and was taking shots, and causing trouble up front."
Andres Vietoris also had a strong game, Lanning said.
"He was playing in the middle and he was playing very aggressively," Lanning said. "That was good to see. He's been asked to do a lot in the midfield. He really did shine in this game."
In goal, Dan Green had another good night, Lanning said.
"He was solid, as he usually is," Lanning said. "We were playing pretty solid soccer, and when they slipped that one goal in, it deflated it us a little bit. They had three or four good scoring chances at the end of the game. Dan came up big."
Hastings lost to East Ridge on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 3-1.
Hastings lost to Park on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 6-0.
The regular season concludes with a 7 p.m. game Thursday, Oct. 7 at White Bear Lake.
