Volleyball: Raiders fall to Raiders, Raptors

A challenging season continues for the Hastings volleyball team.

The Raiders slipped to 2-12 on the season Tuesday with a loss to Cretin-Derham Hall in three games.

The loss was preceded by one Thursday against East Ridge, also in three games.

While Hastings may have lost to the Raptors, head coach Rita Girgen said the match was far better than the one Hastings played two nights earlier in Stillwater.

"It was a much better loss than the Stillwater match," Girgen said. "We were pretty happy with how we played all-around. Our focus from here on out is to keep improving every match, much like we did from Tuesday to Thursday. We are trying to take little steps. All that matters is that we peak at the right time, which is the end of the season.

"Everybody feels pretty good about how we played against East Ridge, despite the loss."

The Raptors won 25-11, 25-22, 25-12.

"We had some strong leadership out on the court," Girgen said. "We had some players that stepped up into roles that we had been lacking. There was an opportunity for some new players to step in. They did, and they did a really good job. They went out there, communicated well and changed the chemistry of what was happening on the floor in a very good way."

Biancca DuFour led Hastings in serve receive with a 3.0. Kaylyn Nicklay had a 2.2 and Alli Steiner had a 2.0.

Devon Santelman led the Raiders in digs with seven. Nicklay had two.

Liz Keena had a solo block and a block assist.

DuFour had five service points. Santelman and Amy Becker had four.

Santelman also had a service ace.

DuFour led the way in kills with six. Katie Nevanen had four.

Nicklay had seven set assists and Becker had five.

Hastings plays at Mounds View tonight (Thursday) then travels to Coon Rapids for an eight-team tournament this weekend.
