Track teams open season at All-American meet

The Hastings boys and girls track teams started their season last weekend at the All American Invite in River Falls, Wis., their only indoor meet this spring.

Hastings invited Park of Cottage Grove and Red Wing to an indoor time trials meet last week, but that was just an opportunity for the students to experiment with the events, and none of the scores counted, Hastings girls coach Greg Sandkamp said.

Seventeen girls teams and 18 boys teams from Minnesota and Wisconsin competed at the River Falls meet.

"It's a big meet," Sandkamp said.

The Raider girls team score of 16 points placed them 12th out of 17 teams.

The Anoka girls had the top spot with 67 points, Lakeville North High took second with 65, and Mounds View and Stillwater tied for third with 60.

The boys had 12 points and took 16th of 18 teams. The La Crosse Central boys won the meet with 68 points, Hudson placed second with 63.5, and Osceola took third with 62.

Partly responsible for Hastings' low scores is the fact that spring break took up one of the two weeks Hastings had to practice before the meet.

Neither coach was too concerned about the results.

"In the long run, it's not going to matter too much," boys coach Jason Koch said.

Sandkamp called the meet something of a novelty, and more an opportunity for the kids to get experience competing indoors and at a college facility.

Because it's still early in the season, the boys were able to mix up their events a bit.

"We didn't put some of our kids in their best events," Koch said.

Doing so lowered their scores, but gave the kids a chance to try something different.

On the girls team, senior Kelly Pechous pulled out the only Hastings first-place for the day, running the 3200 in 12:15.22 and beating Stillwater's Cassie Pratt by about 18 seconds.

Pechous, with senior Maddy O'Brien, freshman Bri Strandberg, and senior Clarese Mancl, placed sixth in the 4x800 relay in 10:49.37.

Another good performance came from junior Sophia Kneen. Kneen jumped 31-08.75 in the girl's triple jump, earning her the sixth-place spot.

"That was a pretty good performance by her," Sandcamp said.

On the boys team, senior Dan Guelle secured a second-place finish in the 400 with a time of 52.37.

"He ran a pretty solid time for this early in the season," Koch said.

Guelle also ran the preliminary 55 dash in 6.75 seconds and qualified him for the final event, which he ran in 7.3 seconds.

Koch also noted senior Michael Rough, who ran a 4:46.58 in the 1600 run, placing eighth out of 29.

"He ran pretty well," Koch said.
