Nordic skiers finally get on the snow

The Hastings Nordic ski teams combined for a seventh-place finish out of eight teams at the Suburban East Conference coed relays Thursday at Troll Hollow.

The Raiders had two teams.

The first was made up of Wyatt Behrends and Sergey Parasich on the boys side and Alicia Beattie and Sarah Peterson for the girls.

Behrends led the race off for Hastings with a time of 5 minutes, 56 seconds in the classic discipline. Beattie followed with a time of 9:41 in classic. Parasich then raced in the skate and had a time of 6:16. Peterson finished the race for Hastings with a time of 8:34.

The overall team time was 30 minutes, 28 seconds. That placed the top Hastings team in 12th.

Behrends placed third among boys racing classic.

Parasich placed fifth for boys racing skate.

Team two was led off by Sean Eglington, who had a classic time of 8:16. Bri Strandberg had the second classic leg and finished with a time of 11:54. Josh Swenson took the skate leg for the boys and had a time of 12:37. Caitlin Whited finished the girls race for Hastings with a skate time of 14:26.

The team's overall time was 47:13.

"For the first time on snow this year for a lot of these kids, I thought they did well," Hastings coach John Dewall said. "It's hard to go out and just start climbing the hills on your first time out."

Behrends' finish had Dewall thrilled.

"I was very impressed with Wyatt," Dewall said. "He went up against some of those Forest Lake kids who have a couple races under their belts already.

"Sergey skied extremely well. All these guys did. They can all only get better."
