Hawks beat Savage, fall to Sauk Rapids in 16 innings

One of the best seasons in Hastings Hawks history came to a crazy ending Sept. 6 in Gaylord.

Hastings advanced to the state's final four teams before getting knocked out of the tournament following a 9-8 16-inning loss to Sauk Rapids.

Hastings took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning on a single by Jared Powell that scored Pat Kelly.

Sauk Rapids tied the score in the bottom of the fifth. Hastings answered with a single run in the top of the sixth. Steve Boldt tripled in a run to give the Hawks the lead back at 2-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, Sauk Rapids scored two runs and took a 3-2 lead.

The Hawks erupted for four runs in the top of the eighth inning. Derrick Pfeffer singled in two runs, and Powell singled in one. Hastings led 6-3.

Sauk Rapids, though, came right back in the bottom of the eighth and scored four runs to take a 7-6 lead.

Hastings countered with two runs in the top of the ninth. Powell singled, Andy Salmela walked, Nate Rost singled and Steve Boldt walked to force one run in. Pfeffer scored another run on a force out, and Hastings led by one, 8-7, going into the bottom of the ninth.

Sauk Rapids scored one run to send the game into extra innings. The winning run was scored in the bottom of the 16th. It was Hastings' second loss of the state tournament, and they were eliminated.

Vs Savage

Hastings advanced in the tournament with a 4-1 win over Savage.

Adam Barta was the winning pitcher for Hastings.

The Hawks scored single runs in the first, second, eighth and ninth innings.

Steve Loos singled in Sam Ryan in the first.

Pfeffer doubled and eventually scored in the second. Andy Salmela knocked in one run, as did Jared Powell.
