The #presson hashtag was born in early 2017 and the impetus quickly became twofold:
• get people to support the gathering and dissemination of facts by paying for journalism,
• combat the demonizing of the press.
As of last week, #presson also means standing with the Capital Gazette, which lost five journalists to a gunman who entered the newspaper's Annapolis, Md., office. The surviving staff were not deterred, putting out a newspaper and covering their tragedy.
At the Hastings Star Gazette, #presson also took a heartwarming turn thanks to the Steva family, who had a box of donuts delivered to our office with a note letting us know they were thinking of us and reminding us how important our work is. This was a beautiful gesture in response to the Capital Gazette tragedy.
The treats — long gone — were appreciated. The card is ours to keep forever.
The calls and emails of support from others mean just as much. You inspire us to do better.
This is what it means to be a community paper. Thank you for the privilege of covering your news. We will press on.
