Editorial: Hockey association on the right track
Anyone who has children growing up in Hastings knows all too well the challenges facing organized sports. The schedules are tricky to juggle, the weather seemingly forces a cancellation every week and gear up and vanishes in the middle of the night.
The greatest concern, though, typically centers around costs. A lot of these youth sports have fees that really add up. The registration fee is one thing. Then there’s the equipment.
We’d like to commend one local organization for offering a free program for its youngest members. The Hastings Hockey Association now offers free hockey for boys and girls who are 6 years of age and under.
The organization outfitted several boys and girls recently will full sets of equipment. There was no registration fee, either. This Friday, the commitment goes even further.
An open skate is planned for boys and girls interested in hockey. The event is, you guessed it, free. Any boys and girls interested in trying hockey are invited to come to the Civic Arena here on Friday night. Free equipment will be loaned out to skaters for the night. Girls skate from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. and boys take the ice from 7:15 to 8:30 p.m.
One of the knocks against hockey for years has been how expensive it can get. At least with this approach, interested boys and girls can give the sport a shot to see if they like it without a financial commitment from their parents.
