Editorial: Raider athletes give our city something to be proud of
On Thursday morning, the Hastings wrestling team took the mat at the state tournament in St. Paul and went on to beat Willmar. Over the weekend, individuals in nine weight classes represented Hastings at the state tournament.
Over in Minneapolis, the boys swimming and diving team competed in the state meet, too, having qualified competitors in 11 of the 12 events.
By all accounts, both teams had remarkable seasons. The wrestlers won yet another conference title and yet another section title.
The swimmers, meanwhile, came in second in the section and went on to place fourth at the state meet.
The success that both programs have had over the years can be attributed to a lot of factors. There has been great work done by coaches at the youth level, the parents who have supported their boys, the athletes themselves and the high school coaches.
What’s best about the two programs, though, is that both have done it with homegrown talent.
The Raiders were also well represented in the state Nordic ski meet by two skiers. They were represented at the state alpine ski meet and were obviously well represented over the weekend in swimming and diving.
Congratulations to all of the winter sports athletes. Your community is proud of you, and we’re especially proud that your programs are all run so well.
