Editorial: Clarifying our coverage and the marriage amendment

We have learned in recent months that this fall's marriage amendment will be followed closely in our community. Letters to the editor have already streamed in, pastors have written passionate columns about the matter and on Sunday a rally was held here to encourage residents to vote "No" on the amendment.

In this week's issue, we have included a few photographs and a story about the rally that took place here.

We'd like to use this space this week to encourage anyone who has planned a vote "Yes" rally to get in contact with us. We would certainly publish a story about your rally, too. We aren't aware of a local vote "Yes" group that has formed. If you have one you want featured, call this newspaper's editor at 651-319-4500.

Second, we want to clarify a couple things about the amendment. Voters will be asked whether or not they are in favor of amending the constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman.

As it stands now, homosexual marriage in Minnesota is not legally recognized. The proposed amendment would take the matter a step further, amending the state's constitution to read that: "Only a union of one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in Minnesota."

Voters are not being asked to make homosexual marriage legal. If voters strike down the amendment, for example, homosexual marriage will still not be recognized as a legal union in Minnesota.
