Lucy Hoffman, also lovingly known as Mom, Mama, Grandma Lucy, Winky and SmoWinky, peacefully passed away on September 27th, 2017 at the age of 63, surrounded by her family. She was our superhero. Born in St. Paul on September 17, 1954, she was an East-sider through and through. She often quipped "you can take the girl out of the East Side but you can't take the East Side out of the girl." She met John, the love of her life, when she was 18 and they were inseparable from then on. Married on October 21, 1978 in Hastings, MN, Lucy and John first lived on the East Side, moving back to Hastings in 1980. She proudly raised two children and loved her grandchildren with every fiber of her being. She loved the Minnesota Twins, and she's pulling strings right now to get them to the World Series. She made friends wherever she went. Her gardens became famous, as did her quick wit, smile and laugh. She battled ALS with strength and courage often reserved for the fiercest among us. And fight she did, against a disease that was always going to win. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, John, daughter Carol, son Mark (Amanda), her beloved grandchildren, Owen and Vivian, mother-in-law Joyce Hoffman, her sisters and sisters-in-law, brothers and brothers-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and countless friends.
Special thanks to Jeri Hoffman, Mary Ann Schultz, the Weekly Weeders and extended family and friends for their help and support. Additional thanks to the staff at the ALS Clinic at Mayo Clinic (especially Dr. Nathan Staff, Dr. Maggie Moutvic, Karla Folkerts and Michelle Turner), the University of Minnesota Speech Therapy department, Dr. Kevin Best at Allina Clinic in Hastings, and Lisa Kronk and the staff at the ALS Association. A celebration of Lucy's life will take place on Saturday, October 21st, 2017 at The Wine Company in St. Paul (425 W Minnehaha Avenue), from 1-4pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Always Lucy Strong, the non-profit organization started in Lucy's honor.
