Richard P. Jahnke
Richard P. Jahnke, age 86 died peacefully Sunday morning, August 27, 2017 at Inver Glen Senior Living, surrounded by family and the supportive staff.
A longtime resident of Hastings, MN, he was born on the family farm near Star Prairie, WI to parents, Chester and Genevieve (Zoller) Jahnke. He attended Cedar Lake Elementary School and graduated from Osceola High School. He met Joan Berg of rural Osceola and they married in 1953. He worked as a farm hand on the Lloyd Johnson farm near Star Prairie, followed by a move to Minnesota and worked on the Hadrath farm near Stillwater and Withrow. A brief stint on the Poppenberger farm near Lake Elmo was followed by a return to the Hadrath farm as farm manager. 1961 brought a relocation to the Herb Bauer farm near Hastings. This long-term position ended in 1970 when he left agriculture and joined the Hastings Unified School District staff as a custodian until his retirement in 1996.
Retirement brought more time for gardening, fishing, garage sales, and reading. He and Joan made several trips to Branson, MO to enjoy music and the shows.
Richard was a steadfast family man who loved to tell a story and to share word puzzles and idioms with anyone willing to listen.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan (Berg), five children & their spouses: Gregory (Brian Richards), Barbara Hamilton, Cynthia (George) Dodge, Mark (Diane) and Bernard (Eileen), 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brother, David and is survived by brothers, Donald (Margaret), Steve (Margie), Hoyt (Judy), sister, Mary Lou Mondor, and sister-in-law, Liz Jahnke.
As complex a character as any one of us, Richard will be deeply missed by those who knew him and will be equally cherished.
