The Hastings Raiders girls' hockey team was a period away from upsetting the second seed in section 3AA, Apple Valley, in their home rink Wednesday night, Feb.7. The seventh-seeded Raiders were up 2-0 on the Eagles heading into the third period and the result looked to be a foregone conclusion as Hastings had all the momentum and were being absolute pests on defense. Apple Valley would not go away, however, and they managed two goals in the third period and another in overtime to win 3-2.

The Raiders got off to a great start with a power-play goal in the middle of the first period from junior Libby Judge, assisted by sophomore Taylor Larson. Then in the middle of the second, senior Josie Kummer scored on a breakaway to give Hastings a 2-0 lead. At the end of the second, they took a costly penalty but were able to kill the Apple Valley power play with just a couple minutes left in the period and took a 2-0 lead into the third.

The entire first two periods the Raiders' defense made the Eagles work for everything and made general pests of themselves. This continued into the third until Apple Valley was able to scratch a goal through just four minutes in. The game became a scramble for the rest of the period and sophomore goalie Alayna Kunshier made a couple critical saves down the stretch, including one against a 2-on-1 after on the Raiders' own power play, as the Hastings defense began to bend. With just a minute left, Apple Valley pulled their goalie and with 44 seconds left the Eagles scored tied the game at two.

Both teams battled for the entire eight-minute overtime period and once again Apple Valley scored with under a minute left to win 3-2. Hastings finishes the season 7-18-1 including the section playoffs loss and after this spring will graduate three seniors; Josie Kummer, Callie McNary and Laynee Connell.
