HHS boys' 4x100 relay team qualifies for state

The Hastings boys' and girls' track teams both had respectable finishes at the section 1AA championships, and the boys' 4x100 relay team qualified for the state tournament.

The boys' team finished sixth out of 14 teams with 37 team points, while the girls' team took ninth out of 15 teams with 36 points. Lakeville South won for the boys and Farmington took first for the girls.

The Raiders' relay team that made it in the 4x100 is made up of seniors Ovie Embu, Josh Miser and Alex King, and junior Avonte Bailey. They ran their preliminary run in 43.69 seconds and their final in 43.56, just behind Lakeville North.

Both the boys' and girls' teams had several athletes advance to the finals. For the girls were:

Senior Lauren Tix finished fourth in the 400 meter dash in 59.73; eighth-grader Linnea Urban finished seventh in the 1,600 (5:28.11) and sophomore Megan Mattson took 22nd in 5:59.25; eighth-grader Avery Daley took 18th in the 3,200 in 12:48.11, while Mattson placed 25th (13:34.38); junior Miranda Hanson took third in the 300 meter hurdles in 47.68 after having the fastest preliminary time; junior Emily Weldon placed fourth with a height of nine feet, six inches (9-06) in the pole vault, while freshman Rachel Hughes finished tied for fifth (9-00) and junior Josie Pechous tied for 10th (9-00); sophomore Hannah Peterson took 11th (15-3 ¼) in the long jump and Linnea Hanson placed 21st (14-05); Rachel Klimek took 17th (31-3 ½) in the triple jump and Peterson placed 22nd (30-3 1/2); sophomores Haylee Yaeger took 21st (30-5 ½) and Megan Tietjen finished 23rd (29-7 1/2) in the shot put; and Yaeger (86-02) and sophomore Jessica Davison (86-00) finished back-to-back in 20th and 21st respectively.

The girls' 4x100 meter relay team of Haley and Rachel Klimek, Liberty Larcholey and CiCi Carlson finished fourth in 50.78; the 4x200 meter relay consisting of Rachel Klimek, Bri Froehling, Carlson and Jen Koudelka also took fourth in 1:46.60; the 4x800 relay of Froehling, Koudelka, Tix and Hanson finished seventh in 4:14.92; and the 4x800 relay team of Daley, Emma Bratvold, Emily Biscoe and Linnea Hanson placed 10th in 10:34.64.

For the boys were: Embu took seventh (11.43) in the 100 meter dash; King finished fifth (23.18) in the 200 meter; senior Jake Brown (52.04) and junior Josh Lewanski (52.83) finished back-to-back in seventh and eighth in the 400; junior David Nogle (4:41.76) took 10th and freshman Jakub Youngstrom (5:04.54) placed 27th in the 1,600; Nogle (10:01.70) finished fifth and junior Griffin Myers (10:29.57) 19th in the 3,200; Miser (6-02) placed fourth in the high jump; sophomore Matt Myers (11-06) and senior Ethan Kimmes (11-06) finished back-to-back tied for ninth and tied for 11th; sophomore Noah Kullman (18-00) took 17th and junior Hayden Niebur (16-06 1/4) placed 26th in the long jump; Niebur (37-7 1/2) placed 17th and freshman William Johnson (36-03) finished 22nd in the triple jump; Miser took sixth (48-10 1/4) and junior Jack Tousignant (40-3 ½) finished 19th in the shot put; and Tousignant (136-05) placed seventh and junior Sawyer Levos (129-08) 11th in the discus.

The state tournament is at Hamline University June 9-10.
