HHS students walk for kindness

The first Kindness Week was held at HHS April 25. Students took some time during the day to take a walk to acknowledge the goodness in others. Pictured is the group in the shape of an 'H' for Hastings. Submitted photo by Jack Tousignant

The Link Crew at Hastings High School led students in a Kindness Week initiative beginning April 24.

"We thought this was an incredible opportunity to bring the best out in people to really slow down as a school community and focus on kindness," said Laura Newton, one of the Link Crew advisors.

Newton said that the idea of Kindness Week began after Gabrielle Novak, a senior Link Crew commissioner, approached the advisors with a desire to perpetuate kindness throughout the school.

Novak said that the Link Crew tries to promote positivity and respect, but there are some down times during the school year. She said that she thought it was important to use the down times to unite the school in a positive manner and bring attention to kindness and respect.

"I believe that little acts of kindness go such a long way and sometimes we (as in us students) get so caught up in our own lives that we forget the impact of being kind," Novak wrote in an email.

The week began Monday morning when Link Crew members greeted everyone as they came into the school. They opened doors and gave pay-it-forward message cards. Crew members made posters with kind messages spread throughout the school.

On Tuesday, the students took some time during the day to go outside for a walk. They congregated in one area into the shape of an "H" for Hastings and took a photo.

Novak said that she hopes everyone was reminded of the impact that kindness can have on the people around them.
