Hastings High School senior Jack VanZee set a new school record in the 500 freestyle during the preliminary round of the state swimming and diving meet at the University of Minnesota on Friday night.

VanZee finished the race in four minutes and 38 seconds, shaving a little more than a second off Michael Seleskie's previous school record.

VanZee won his heat handily, then took a look at the scoreboard to check his time. That's when he saw the 4:38 and at that point he let out a little smile.

"The monkey is off his back," coach Gerry Rupp said as he passed by at the meet.

VanZee had taken aim at the school record in the 500 several years ago and, in his second-to-last night of swimming as a Raider, he got the job done.

The state meet finals are Saturday night.

The 200 and 400 freestyle relays are in the state's top eight, as is diver Vova Tipler.
