City Council: New fire truck, downtown improvements and the 2014 budget

The Hastings City Council will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19. Here’s a look at what’s on the agenda.

A presentation will recognize the years of service given by officer Larry Evans. Another presentation will provide an update on the Helping Kids Succeed – The Hastings Way initiative.

The council will vote on whether or not to approve a purchase agreement for an articulating aerial fire apparatus with water pump, costing just under $1.2 million. The purchase would replace the existing 1976 truck. The funds were allocated through the Fire ERF account and equipment certificates in the 2013 budget.

The city is starting to take a serious look at downtown redevelopment. Staff is requesting council permission to start initial design work cost estimation and feasibility studies for the proposed 2014 Downtown Pavement & Utilities Rehabilitation and Levee Park Improvements project. The project includes a number of paving improvements in the downtown area, streetscape replacements, a bathroom facility and Levee Park improvements.

Staff will also give a presentation on the 2014 budget. This will be an informational presentation that will address preliminary budget numbers, capital requests and personnel requests. The preliminary levy is expected to be set Tuesday, Sept. 3.
