PHOTOS: Artspace Hastings conducts hard hat tours

Artspace Hastings River Lofts are quickly approaching their completion goal of July. During the afternoon of May 2, hard hat tours were conducted for about 56 people showing how far the project has come.

Members of the community toured the $12.6 million mixed-use project located on a long-vacant former industrial site at the east end of downtown Hastings' historic main street. Community members who attended the tour saw the units on the third floor, walked up and down the stairwells, walked through the lobby and commercial space on the first floor and viewed the outdoor area that will have a parking lot.

Becky Carlson St. Clair, the project manager, said that the tours resulted in lots of excitement from community members. She said that she received several comments from people about the great views of the river.

The project has continued to stay on track since construction began, something Carlson St. Clair attributes to a mild winter. Construction workers were in the progress of completing the roof as of the hard hat tour day. Once the roof is done and the brick work and external materials have been completed, the drywall can get started. Then the rest of the interior will start to take shape.

When it is complete, the building will feature 37 live/work affordable apartments designed with artists in mind. There will also be an art gallery on site, some outdoor living and performance spaces, and one corner reserved for public commercial use.

There are still some units available. For anyone interested in living in the building, they are encouraged to fill out a pre-application by visiting and clicking on the "leasing" tab.
