City Council: Streets, downtown improvements and a fishing contest

The Hastings City Council will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, March 3, at City Hall. Here’s a look at what’s on the agenda.

The public will be invited to comment on the 2014 neighborhood infrastructure improvement project, which will reconstruct streets along portions of 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, Eddy, Ashland, Forest, Walnut and Maple streets. This public hearing will focus on the scope and features of the project. After hearing the comments, the council will vote on whether or not to approve the project. If approved, work is expected to begin by late May and finish in early September. The total project is estimated to cost about $3.94 million.

A presentation will be given regarding progress on the downtown Hastings “Riverfront Renaissance” project. The presentations will show concept drawings developed for downtown projects. The public will be given an opportunity to comment on the project and offer suggestions. The plans are not final; therefore, the council will not take any action to approve or deny the plans at this time.

Two items are coming before the council regarding a business that is working toward opening in Hastings. Hexfuel is looking to move into the Hastings industrial park on Spiral Boulevard and, in the process of acquiring assistance through the state, is seeking the city’s approval of its project. Hexfuel also seeks a Right of First Refusal Agreement with the city, which would ensure it has an opportunity for the next five years to match any offer made to buy the property it seeks to purchase.

A preliminary plat is being submitted by housing developer Greg J. Homes Inc. for the South Pointe Addition, located northeast of West 36th Street and South Pointe Drive.

The Hastings Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau is planning a fishing tournament May 1 to 3 in Jaycee Park. The Chamber is requesting the event be designated a special event, which allows special vendor permits to be issued.
