City Council: Barbecues on the patio, water pollution and last year's financial report

The Hastings City Council will hold its next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, June 3, in the council chambers at City Hall. Here's a look at what's on the agenda.

A change to the use of barbecues on patios and decks will be discussed. The current ordinance prohibits the use of barbecues on patios and decks in multi-unit residential buildings. The rule applies not only to multi-level apartments or townhomes, but also to single-level townhomes or quad-homes with individual unit egresses. The city has been asked to revisit the ordinance to allow barbecue grilling on patios at single-level townhomes and quad-homes, as it does not affect neighbors above or below them. Barbecuing or grilling on apartment complex patios or decks would still be prohibited. The public will be invited to comment on the proposed change before the council votes.

A public hearing will be held regarding the city's Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan. The Federal Clean Water Act requires small cities to submit a permit to discharge storm water into receiving water bodies. The permit covers a five-year period and is intended to reduce pollutants from storm sewer discharge points and overland runoff. The public hearing is an annual requirement.

City staff will present the 2012 comprehensive annual financial report. The report is a review of the yearly audit of city finances.
