Another activity at the assembly involved strapping a kleenex box with ping pong balls in it to the waists of some students and teachers. The goal was to "Shake it Off" while a Taylor Swift song was being played in order to release the ping pong balls. Michelle Wirth / RiverTown Multimedia2 / 2

Things got a little messy at Hastings Middle School as several staff members received a tasty treat at the HMS assembly March 19. Four teachers were pied in the face as well as student resource officer Ryan Kline of the Hastings Police Department.

Three students were selected to throw a pie for each teacher participating. The fifth graders pied Eric Mace, the sixth graders pied Miki Atkins, the seventh graders pied Lori Best and the eighth graders pied Christian Waage.

The assembly was part of the Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program with the intention of motivating kids to be "Ready to Learn." The PBIS program is a framework to help school personnel create a positive and supportive school environment that promotes success for all students.
