Christa McAuliffe Elementary School hosted the the Many Nations, One Celebration event put on by the Parent-Teacher Coalition and AFS-USA Friday, May 12.
The McAuliffe PTC wanted to put together an event that highlights the diversity in Hastings and the surrounding area. They partnered with AFS-USA (formerly the American Field Service) an organization that promotes "intercultural learning and offers international exchange programs" according to their website. AFS helps bring over foreign exchange students to the US and sends American students overseas all over the country including Hastings and the southeast metro. Numerous rooms throughout the school were converted to represent over 15 different countries, while AFS exchange students and volunteers gave presentations on whatever country they were from or had traveled too.
Kids and their families were given passport books and with each room they visited and they received a stamp in their booklet. There were countries from all around the world, including: Australia/New Zealand, Tanzania, Kenya, Italy, Greece, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway, Mexico, Ecuador, Pakistan, Russia, Thailand, Japan and China.
