Nielsen named Rotary Club's student of the month
The Hastings Rotary Club’s student of the month is Hastings senior Craig Nielsen.
Olson’s comments made when nominating Nelson were: “This is my first year being able to teach Craig, but I have known him for many years through basketball. There are many great students that I have had the opportunity to coach, but I would say none as well rounded as Craig. Craig has grown into one of the best role models that a coach could ask for. He goes out of his way to say hi to young kids and is one of the crowd favorites for youth basketball. He also brings other young basketball players with him into the gym for workouts when he could just be involving people at the varsity level. The way he comes to practice every day ready to play and to be a leader to others is a coach’s dream. Besides the basketball aspect he is an incredible leader in the building being involved in NHS and Link Crew. How lucky for freshmen coming into the building to be able to see a senior like Craig who models a great work ethic with a positive attitude. If there is a student I know that is struggling to meet people or may be new to the building Craig is the first person I would introduce them to. Having him in class this year just tops it off for me. I can already tell the type of student through these first few weeks because he models the same traits that I see on the basketball floor. He listens intently, comes ready to work, and is involved with the class helping everyone succeed.”“I hope we see another Craig come through this building soon, but I know he is one of a kind and I’m enjoying every last minute with him this senior year. I don’t think there is another student more deserving than Craig for this award. I’m sure there are many other teachers who feel the same way as I do, but I’m just lucky that I get to see him in school, out of school, and most of the summer. Craig is a very deserving recipient.”
