Hastings area schools plan orientations, open houses

The days of summer will soon be replaced with classes at Hastings area schools. Orientation sessions for new and returning students have been scheduled.

Here’s information on each.

Hastings High School

The first day of school is Tuesday, Sept. 2, and is only for ninth-grade students, their Link Leaders and those students in grades 10, 11, and 12 who are new to Hastings.

All students will be in session Wednesday, Sept. 3. They should report to their first period classes by 7:50 a.m. It will be a full day of classes.

For incoming ninth-grade students Sept. 2, they should leave all backpacks and school supplies home that first day. All they need to bring to school is their schedule and a lunch, or money in their online account. The day of school is planned to be enjoyable and will give the students the opportunity to learn the layout of the building.

The Link Crew pairs new students with older student leaders to held to create a connection to the school. Link Crew members will stay in contact with new students and freshmen throughout the year.

A “Back to School” open house will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11. The evening will give parents the opportunity to follow their child’s schedule and meet their teachers.

Parking fees are $100 per semester and require a completed agreement signed by the student and parent. Students may purchase parking stickers from 9 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at the attendance window.

Hastings Middle School

Orientation sessions for new students were held earlier this week. Returning students in grades seven and eight will meet from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, in the school cafeteria. Students with the last names of A to L will meet from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and students with the last names of M to Z will meet from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The information sessions are at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

A make-up orientation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, with the information session at 5 p.m. in the school auditorium.

The school year begins Tuesday, Sept. 2, for fifth-graders and any new students.

Seton School

A back-to-school orientation for all students in grades kindergarten to grade eight will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at the main campus, 600 Tyler St. Students can come with their parents during that time frame and visit their classrooms, meet their teachers and tour the building.

The middle school orientation is from 4 p.m. A cookout, sponsored by the Seton School Parents Association will be held outside beginning at 5 p.m.

Students can also participate in individual tours from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Registrations are still being accepted for this school year.

Registrations are also being accepted for the preschool, housed at Seton Church, 2035 W. 15th St. Different programs are offered. A registration fee of $40 is due at registration and is nonrefundable.

The fee does not apply toward tuition.

Classes for Seton School, grades one to eight, begin Tuesday, Sept. 2. Kindergarten begins Thursday, Sept. 4.

Pine Harbor Christian Academy

An orientation/all parent meeting will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at the school, 11125 W. Point Douglas Road.

Classes resume Tuesday, Sept. 2.

St. John the Baptist

St. John the Baptist School, Vermillion, is offering an extended day program for preschool students. Morning preschool is from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Extended day will begin at 11:30 a.m. and conclude at 3:30 p.m. The students will bring a bag lunch.
