Hastings school district sets plan to make-up lost days

There will still be a four-day President’s Day weekend for area students, but the Hastings District 200 school calendar has been revised to make up for some of the five days of school closings in January. Students still meet the State of Minnesota requirements for school attendance.

The revised calendar, released Tuesday, is a combination of changing one entire day off to a full day, early-release days to now full days, and adjusting times for elementary and high school conferences.

Superintendent Tim Collins said that it the changes help the district get back two days of time.

“But technically, it is one real day because we can’t count April and May as added days because students were already going to be in attendance on those days,” he said.

The first noticeable change will be Friday, Feb. 28. In the approved calendar, it had been designated as a day for students to be out of school. Now, students will attend classes all day.

In other changes – the two early release days set for Thursday, April 17, and Friday, May 16, have been changed to full days of classes.

The elementary conferences will be adjusted from 20 minutes in length to 15 minutes. They are set for Tuesday, Feb. 25, and Thursday, Feb. 27, by appointment.

Conferences at the high school have been adjusted and will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27; and 2:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 in the classrooms and offices.

The State of Minnesota sets guidelines outlining the minimum expected number of days and hours that students should be in attendance. The number of days is 165 for all students in grades 1 to 12, and the hours are 1,020 for a high school student.

The number of hours varies depending on the age of the student. Collins stressed that Hastings students will still exceed the number of required days this years. Grades 1 to 5 and ninth grade are at 168 days; grades 6, 7, 8, 10 and 11 will be at 167 days. Seniors will be at 163 days, but meet the minimum number of hours for attendance.
