Denmark Township Historical Society plans celebration Sept. 30

It will be back to school -- or, at least, a visit to one -- when the Denmark Township Historical Society holds a School Daze celebration from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at Carpenter Nature Center, 12805 St. Croix Trail S., and the 1852 Valley School, 13728 St. Croix Trail S.

Members of the Denmark Township Historical Society have been holding a raffle to help in the restoration of the building they acquired earlier this year. The drawing for the prizes is at 3 p.m. Sept. 30 at the pavilion at the nature center.

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., guests can visit the Valley School. They can park at the nature center and catch the school bus for a ride to the school. Guests can walk on the nature center trails and visit other areas. A horse-drawn wagon ride and refreshments will be available.

The Save Our School (SOS) prizes are a handmade quilt created by Joanne Olson; a signed copy of the book, "Train Pictures 1946-1957: A History of the Golden Age of U.S. Railroading" by Charles McCreary; and a Spirit SP-320 gas stainless steel barbeque grill donated by Terry's Hardware and Lyla Davies.

Tickets for the drawings are $2 each or 10 for $20. Winners need not be present at the drawing.

The schoolhouse was built in 1852 in the former village of Point Douglas. The Valley School closed in 1946 and students began going to school in Hastings.

The successful completion of Phase I of the campaign raised $40,000 for the purchase and restoration.

The society will raise another $40,000 by May 1, 2013, to complete the purchase, and an additional $45,000 to restore the building.

Members will work with educators and board of education representatives to develop classroom experiences for children in the restored school. They also will offer free public events and programs on historic topics in the schoolhouse.
