Hastings schools begin 2012-2013 year Tuesday

About 5,000 students return to classes next week in Hastings area schools. For some, the first day of classes is Tuesday, Sept. 4. The rest begin class on Wednesday, Sept. 5.

High school

The first day for ninth grade students and students new in grades 10, 11 and 12 will be Tuesday, Sept. 4, at Hastings High School. This will be a full day of school, running from 7:50 a.m. to 2:40 p.m., with the purpose of easing the transition into Hastings High School.

In addition, every student at the high school will be supplied with an organizational planner and student handbook courtesy of the EXCEL Program. The planner will include a calendar as well as school policies, schedules of activities and games each day, information on the choices at lunch, a map of the building and tips for academic success.  Every student will use their planner on this first day to map out their classrooms and get organized for each class.

Students should report to the HHS commons by 7:45 a.m. and will be attending each of their semester one classes during the day.

"Student leaders and community members will help in creating a positive first day for our new students," said Principal Mike Johnson. "We want the first day of high school to be enjoyable, allow students the opportunity to get to know the building layout, understand the services offered and the expectations for graduation, and fully understand the lunch system at HHS."

Students should not bring their backpacks and other school supplies that first day (Sept. 4). They should bring their schedules and a lunch, lunch money or money in their on-line accounts.

Link Crew will be in place during the day. Link Crew pairs new students with older student leaders to create a positive connection with the school. These link leaders will stay in contact with the new students and ninth grade students throughout the entire school year.

Middle school

The first day of classes at Hastings Middle School -- Sept. 4 -- is for fifth-grade students and students new in grades 6, 7 and 8. All students will return for a full day of classes Wednesday, Sept. 5.

There were two major projects completed at the school over the summer months. The pool has been renovated and is already being used by the swimming team. The locker rooms are not yet complete, but they should be completed shortly.

The staff and visitor parking been redone and allows for better traffic flow and separation of the buses from the pedestrian area. The parking along the east side (by the district office) has been eliminated. The entrance to the district offices remains on the east side.
