Mission Mexico gala is Feb. 12

Enjoy an early Valentine's Day event with a good meal, music, and help Mission Mexico raise some funds for this year's trip in June.

The first Mission Mexico Gala will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 W. 15th St. Doors opens at 6 p.m., with dinner (catered by the Point) at 6:30 p.m. Young people who have participated in previous Mission Mexico trips will present a slide show and offer testimonials at 7:30 p.m. The live auction follows. Walden Pond Revisited will provide music from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The 15th semi-annual mission trip, set for June 18 to June 26, for senior high youths is supported by five Hastings churches - Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, United Methodist Church, St. Philip's Lutheran Church and Hope Lutheran Church.

As with the most recent mission in 2009, this mission trip will be to El Paso, Texas, with the young people and leaders staying at the University of Texas, El Paso, and then going out for mission work, home building and remodeling, and flood restoration.

The Feb. 12 fundraiser is the first of its kind for Mission Mexico and is for adults, said board member Tim Mellesmoen.

"We're raising funds to pay for the materials we will use in El Paso," he said. Wine will be available for sale at the gala. Table sponsorships are available.

The live auction led by Fladebo Auction will include such items as a Green Bay Packer tickets, an autographed Minnesota Vikings football, a week in Puerto Vallarta, Wild tickets and jersey signed by the team, a glider ride, a New York Rangers signed jersey, spa certificates, a framed water color by Andy Evenson, handmade quilts and a flowering crab tree.

Tickets are $35 each and are available Seton Church, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, St. Philip's Lutheran Church, Hope Lutheran Church and United Methodist Church. Dinner choice is beef, chicken or vegetable pasta.

More participants needed

As the Mission Mexico board members seek to raise funds, they are also seeking more student participants. Forty have registered, and there is room for another 60.

"The trip is an important one -- it is important to help other organizations which help people in Juarez," said Mellesmoen. "And yes, we do not go into Mexico, but you will see the impact of what is happening in Mexico."

The trip costs $1,358 per individuals, and a down payment of $200 is required. The cost should not scare anyone away, said Mellesmoen, as there are a number of fund-raisers which can help to reduce costs. The application forms are available in the supporting church offices.

Mission Mexico trips have been part of the Hastings tradition since 1983; some of the recent participants are second-generation participants, said Mellesmoen.

"It is important for people to be part of an organization which helps other organizations help people in a faith-based atmosphere," he said.

The first of the large group meetings for trip participants is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 30, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Additional monthly meetings are scheduled.

Anyone interested in making a donation for the Mission Mexico trip can do so by sending it to: Mission Mexico, Box 132, Hastings, MN 55033.
